Texas lost jobs at a 0.7 percent annual rate last month, a slight improvement from August, the Texas Workforce Commission reported. The unemployment rate was 7.2 percent, unchanged from September but up from 4.6 percent in September 2008. The statewide unemployment rate was 8.2 percent, up from 8 percent in September. But the state lost 44,700 jobs between September 2008 and last month. In the Austin area, the biggest percentage drop continued to be in manufacturing, with an 11.5 percent year-over-year decline. That mostly reflects deep cuts by high-tech employers.
